Located in Central Europe, Ljubljana has influences from both Western and Eastern Europe. The city is located within Central Slovenia, within close reach of both Alpine peaks and seaside towns on the Mediterranean coast. This charming hidden gem may be small, but it’s bursting with personality. The calm, creative energy of Ljubljana invites you to slow down, and while it may feel like a fairy tale, it’s very much alive.

Spending a bit longer here would also give you time to take a day trip to the beautiful nearby Lake Bled – it will absolutely take your breath away. The prices here are relatively affordable, especially for food, transport and attractions. It’s the perfect city break destination for couples, solo travelers and culture lovers alike.

Unmissable Things to Do in Ljubljana

Ljubljana Castle

This medieval castle sits on a hill above the city, offering panoramic views (from the Panoramic Tower, you can even see the Alps on a clear day). To get to the castle, you can either walk up the forested paths, or take the funicular railway. It’s free to explore the castle’s courtyard, but you can also explore the castle itself, the Museum of Slovenian History and the Chapel of St George.

Ljubljanica River & Triple Bridge

The Ljubljanica River flows right through the heart of Ljubljana’s old town. The riverside is lined with cafes, markets and shops, but the most picturesque point is Triple Bridge. A walk or a boat ride along the river is the perfect way to absorb this charming, laid back city.

Central Market & Open Kitchen

Central Market, located within the old town, is open daily and full of energy. Here you’ll find fresh produce and local goods. Each Friday (Spring-Autumn), right next to the market, you can find Open Kitchen – street food stalls run by the top chefs from across the country.

Tivoli Park

Just a short walk from the center of Ljubljana, you’ll find Tivoli Park. This beautiful park which spans over 5 square kilometers is perfect for a walk, a picnic or just to escape from the city to enjoy some nature. You can also take a walk up Rožnik Hill for great views of the city.

Prešeren Square

This lively, scenic square is located right at the heart of the old town. It’s both the emotional and cultural heart of the city. The architecture is stunning and the street performers make the area feel alive. It’s home to the pink Franciscan Church, the square’s most recognisable landmark, and Triple Bridge is located here too. The square is pedestrian only, which makes it feel open and relaxed, despite being heavily frequented by both locals and tourists.

Getting Around Ljubljana

Ljubljana being very compact makes it a very walkable city. Most attractions are within approximately 15 minutes of each other. The historic center is car free which makes it easy and enjoyable to get around, both on foot and by bike. In the pedestrian zone, you’ll find electric cars (Kavalirs) which give free rides to anyone who needs help getting around. The city has a small, efficient bus network. You’ll need an Urbana card which you can get at kiosks, stations or a tourist office for €2.00 (which will be refunded if you bought it from a tourist office and return the card at the end of your trip). Tickets start from €1.30 (approx. £1.10 GBP/$1.50 USD) and this ticket is valid for unlimited journeys for 90 minutes.

Planning a Trip to Ljubljana?

April-June and September-October are great times to visit Ljubljana due to the good weather, smaller crowds and good prices. There are also plenty of festivals throughout these months. There is a lot going on in summer and the weather is great, but with it comes higher prices and more tourists. Winter is colder and quieter, but still a great time to visit if you’re interested in winter sports in the nearby Alps. In December you can also enjoy the Christmas markets and festive atmosphere.
